There are many other scripts coming out of the gothic time. Gothic Littera Bastarda example of cadelĪlthough these are both gothic scripts, the writing is often very different at times. Cadels have exaggerated flourishing ascenders and descenders and take up more room than the other letters. Punctuation marks seen include punctus like the modern colon, elevated and regular punctus, the dash and strokes above letters.Īnother feature of Gothic Littera Bastarda is the use of cadels which are elaborate decorative capital letters usually at the beginnings of a manuscript. Punctuation in Bastarda is also similar to Gothic Textura Quadrata. Much like Gothic Textura Quadrata, letters are often conjoined by shared strokes and ligatures are formed such as with st and ct. The long slim ascenders can often be seen at the beginning of words. The ascenders especially and some descenders were often long and exaggerated with decorative curved strokes. The letters are often very slim and high with curved vertical strokes. It was designed to be similar to the textura scripts in beauty but could be written more quickly like cursive. Gothic Littera Bastarda is our other example of a gothic script. Seen here is an example of Gothic Textura. Marks that look like periods (sometimes raised), colons and strokes above letters are regularly used. The use of points and strokes can be seen in the regular sentences and abbreviations in scripts. Gothic Textura conjoined “de”īy the time of gothic writing, punctuation is becoming more common and it can be seen throughout the texts. Although, many letters were placed together, ligatures such as et and ct were being phased out. Letters often shared a stroke between them if it was the same stroke such as b and d or o and g. It was written so that the space between words was twice the length as between letters. Gothic Textura Quadrata D-005 Gothic Textura Prescisus vel sine PedibusĪs seen above, textura scripts are carefully written so that the space between vertical strokes is the same length as the vertical stroke. Notice the “feet” in the vertical strokes of the Quadrata script below and the lack of feet in the Gothic Textura Prescisus vel sine Pedibus below that. The script Gothic Textura Prescisus vel sine Pedibus is an example of a script that is without feet (sine pedibus) though it is also a woven script resembling Gothic Textura Quadrata. The Quadrata script is one that has feet. Textura scripts are divided into two groups, the scripts that ended vertical strokes into “feet” and scripts that did not. Gothic Textura Quadrata is a gothic period textura script which is a writing that is woven together or like a texture. The practices to write gothic scripts show an evolution from earlier scripts as well as the coming of new practices. Gothic scripts did not just emerge but came with elements from other scripts as well. There are many variations of gothic scripts Gothic Textura Quadrata and Gothic Littera Bastarda are just two examples of how much gothic scripts vary. ![]()
